nature's path organic sunny hemp bars, kale, marcona almonds, häagen-dazs chocolate ice cream!
italian veg meatball sammies and garlic fries
veg bbq pork and black eyed peas wraps
spaghetti with chard, dried currants, and toasted garlic (smitten kitchen)
armenian lentil burgers and fork-crushed purple potatoes (the oregonian & smitten kitchen)
barley risotto with beans and greens (smitten kitchen)
clearly, i am loving smitten kitchen, a food blog i discovered when i googled "purple potatoes." (i bought purple tots at the market because they were so pretty, but what would be the best way to serve them up??) smitten kitchen is authored/produced by new yorker, deb, and her husband/assistant, alex. i don't know how i never came across this blog while surfing, but i'm glad i finally did. the recipes are practical, her commentary is funny, and the photos are ridiculously gorgeous (and for moms & pops: her baby food section is fabulous!)
lately we've been in a major meal impasse, uninspired and disinterested in the daily feast that is dinner. usually when this happens, we hit the frozen dinner aisle and order pizza. dan's strategy during our grocery trip seemed to be: let's grab whatever we see first and make a dinner out of it. one result? the bbq pork and black-eyed pea wraps. as soon as we entered trader joe's he grabbed flour tortillas, then reached for ready-made black eyed peas, and a pre-cooked veggie bbq pork that caught his eye. with lettuce and tomato, he had a healthy and yummy wrap. one dinner down, six to go.

the nature's path granola bars have become my best friends. with precarious blood sugar levels, i have to snack, and i count on these. i usually have one between breakfast and lunch, but often it ends up being my breakfast. :-P
my favorites are the sunny hemp bar and peanut buddy bar. the hemp bar has sunflower, flax, and hemp seeds, as well as raisins and molasses. i prefer the peanut buddy bar (rolled oats, peanuts, peanut butter) to the peanut choco bar, but if you've got to have that chocolate icing, it's a decent indulgence with only 1 g of sugar and 10 calories difference between the two. also, thumbs up fpr the pumpkin-n-spice and lotta apricotta bars. still left to try: chococonut granola, mmmaple pecan, and berry strawberry.
i know i "featured" kale before, but i picked it again this week because we are going to make baked kale chips, a popular recipe that has made the rounds (again and again) on food sites and blogs (allrecipes, smitten kitchen, gluten-free girl, etc.) i'm curious because they are so simple but everyone just loves them. i'll let you know what it think, or tell me if you've tried them.
the marcona almonds are a splurge i treated myself to this week, along with some lovely white tulips, and i'm forever grateful for allyson for pointing them out at trader joe's when she was here last summer.
and häagen-dazs? need i say anything at all? LOL. it's dan's reward for giving up his half-carton of ice cream every night habit. he gets one pint of goodness to enjoy throughout the week!
